The Anniversary

You read right, I'm posting on The Anniversary. The now-defunct five piece were all boy-girl harmonies and Moog riffs, making them my favorite band years ago - Vagrant Records at its best. I'm obviously feeling nostalgic today.

Designing A Nervous Breakdown was their first and best. It didn't pretend to be anything other than sentimental and infinitely catchy. I really am a sucker for harmony, and to hear three singers at once just melts me.

Your Majesty was their second and last album, a drastic change from the emo-pop of their debut. This is when they started dressing like hippies and let things get to their collective head. The album had a few good half-baked classic rock jams, but even more duds. The rift between primary songwriters Berwanger and Roelofs became apparent, with the former making more of the crappy songs and the latter making the decent rocking ones. It was clear that the band was entirely pretentious, and eventually all ties were cut (read: bridges were burned) between the band and their label, as well as with longtime friends the Get Up Kids. And then the band broke up.

The Anniversary - Sweet Marie (Roelofs)

The Anniversary - Tou-Whitt-To-Whoo (Berwanger)

Bonus video! They really did fancy themselves the Biggest Band In The World.

I hope someone sees this and remembers how much they liked The Anniversary, or I'll be embarrassed.

Enjoy!
