Great New Brand New photo!
Happy Halloween.
When people I talk to say that they don't like rap music or country, I'm led to believe they have only been exposed to the current mainstream forms of these genres. Mainstream country music today is really just twangy pop, and mainstream hip hop isn't really "hip hop" in its traditional definition. I feel this response has less to do with the actual listening tastes of the person, and more to do with the totally shittiness the mainstream produces. In fact, I believe that a person who gives this reply, and thus portrays themselves as somewhat discerning, might take better to, say, Hank Sr. or Aesop Rock than someone continually fed more mainstream portrayals of artists in these genres.
Interesting point, Michael. I often find myself agreeing with you, though I personally like a fair amount of mainstream country (and hip-hop). A lot of it is pretty enjoyable... a time & place for everything.
